This series began from a desire to move through darkness and work toward light. Living through what feels like a dark moment in American history, I found myself thinking about chiaroscuro, bioluminescence, symbiotic relationships with nature, and the shapes of tools and instruments we use for harmony, endurance, and transformation.
The paintings grew out of the next installment of my Hexas series, which follows a young witch using collective magic to resist the rise of an authoritarian leader. In one scene, the character enters a music class and encounters a collection of instruments, tools, and apparatuses. I began making drawings of objects that might exist in that room—forms that could be used not only to make sound, but to focus energy, listen deeply, persevere, and imagine a future.
Each painting carries a different emotional charge. The first is about perseverance and strength. The second emerged while I was falling in love, and became a way of giving form to that feeling. The third centers on perspective, listening, and future-gazing. Across the series, I wanted these objects to feel organic, familiar, spiritual, constructed, otherworldly, and alive.
I think of them as instruments of inner energy, forms with essence and soul. They are reminders that what we carry inside ourselves can become a tool: for harmonizing, surviving, transforming, and moving toward something luminous.
